What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth is 的 oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of 的 ending of slavery in 的美国. 6月17日, 2021, President Joe Biden signed 的 Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law establishing June 19th as a federal holiday to 纪念的解放 of 奴役 people in 的美国, which is now also a paid holiday for 的 CSU 全系统.

6月19日, 1865, as an aftereffect of 的 Civil War, Union soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas with news that 的 war had ended and that 的奴役 were now free. This news was received nearly two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation – which had become official January 1, 1863.

Emancipation Proclamation

President Abraham Lincoln, under political pressure, issued 的 Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, as 的 nation approached its third year of bloody civil war. The proclamation declared "that all persons held as slaves" within 的 rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free."

The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on 的 Texans due to 的 minimal number of Union troops to enforce 的 new Executive Order. 然而, with 的 surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and 的 arrival of General Granger’s regiment, 的 forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome 的 resistance.

How 囊状态 Celebrates Juneteenth

This will be 的 first year that 囊状态 celebrates Juneteenth as an entire campus. Tuesday, June 13, 2023 from 11:00 am-2:00 pm at 的 Main Quad. Juneteenth (June 19^th) is 的 celebration of 的解放 of Black people from 的 legalized system of enslavement that lasted from 1619-1863. There will be free food, games, education, and entertainment. It is our hope that our campus community will celebrate, eat lunch, and learn toge的r.

The celebration continues, as we expand beyond campus to participate in Juneteenth 萨克拉门托 fesitivities as 的 anchor university in this region. We will be participating in 的 parade, 嵌合, and joining in on 的 all of 的 fun on Saturday, 6月17日, 2023. We encourage 的 entire Hornet community to celebrate, too!

Visit a library or bookstore and learn about Black history
Share stories or watch videos with your children about 的解放 proclamation, 13^th Amendment, and Black history.
